Former NBA player Rajon Rondo was arrested Sunday in Indiana on misdemeanor charges: firearm, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia.
The two-time NBA champion was driving a black 2022 Tesla with a youth inside on Sunday at around 1:00 p.m. A trooper pulled him to the side, after a call reported unsafe and reckless driving on the I-65 southbound in Bartholomew County.
According to a statement by the Indiana State Police, “During initial contact with the driver, identified as Rajon P. Rondo, age 37, the trooper observed the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. During a search of the vehicle, suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia was located.”
When the trooper approached Rondo, he smelled marijuana, prompting a search of his vehicle. Officials found marijuana and a firearm inside his vehicle. As stated by officials, the former NBA player is “prohibited from possessing the firearm due to him having a protection order in place against him.”
Rajon Rondo has been in trouble with the law before
According to WDRB-TV, this is not Rondo’s first encounter with police, as he has had various run-ins with the law.
In 2022, a Louisville woman claimed Rondo had threatened her life and waved a firearm in her face. As a result, she requested an emergency protective order against the former Laker player.
A year later, Rondo got the order dismissed but had to attend counseling, an anger management class, and a mental health assessment. However, in March 2023, the same woman filed a second order. Rondo and the woman resolved the order five months later.
After the incident, a relative took the juvenile. Officials did not reveal Rondo’s connection to the individual.
A date for his initial appearance in the Jackson County Superior Court will be determined soon, as stated by the police department.
Rondo played for several teams as an NBA star, including the Los Angeles Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers, and the Boston Celtics, where he led the team to an NBA championship in 2008.
