Branded as the #1 Barber Booking App in the nation, theCut is perfect for finding local barbers, setting up appointments, and paying for services.
It’s the first of its kind in its ability to allow residents of communities to find hairstyles in their community without hassle.
The Black-owned organization doesn’t only fill a void within the app space, but the company also gives back to education, specifically when it comes to barbers.
About theCut’s Scholarship
In late 2023, theCut launched their scholarship, Save Financial Aid for Student Barbers, which focuses on funding barbers and hairstylists in training to become the best versions of themselves.
This move was to rectify the Department of Education’s potential decision to deem these professions as low-class, which would result in a lack of funding and resources for trainers to learn and work in their field. The scholarship currently awards $5,000 to every chosen recipient.
There are hardly any requirements for applying, with the main prerequisite being that you are interested in pursuing a career in cosmetology or barbering. The scholarship is currently accepting applications for 2024, with a deadline set for March 2024.
Behind The Brand
While he doesn’t have experience as a barber himself, the founder of theCut, Obi Omile, has spent the past few years dedicated to uplifting the undervalued and under-appreciated profession as much as possible.
“We’re on a mission to modernize the barbershop industry, building tools that empower Barbers to be better entrepreneurs and to create the lives they want to live,” he told Lifewire in an interview.
With Omile’s innovative app, thousands of positive reviews, and inspirational scholarship, theCut is fulfilling its mission.
Why This Scholarship Is Needed
Unfortunately, most people have a horror story revolving around an appointment with a barber or hairstylist that went wrong. With this scholarship, which specifically aids in the education of these professionals, Omile hopes that this problem will improve.
“Making sure that we have a future filled with barbers and stylists is obviously important for the mere fact of grooming and appearance upkeep,” he explained to Black Enterprise. “However, it’s also important to manage supply and demand dynamics to keep prices steady and to best mitigate against unsafe practices throughout the industry.”
Not to mention, if barbers and hairstylists in training don’t have the funds to continue their education, they are forced to leave the profession.
Forbes reported that from 1992-2012, nearly a quarter of barbershops in the U.S. closed. If companies like theCut don’t step up and offer resources, the entire hair industry could become obsolete in a few years.
How We Can Help
Organizations like theCut are propelled forward through the donations of kind-hearted individuals. If you choose to monetarily contribute to theCut, 100% of your donation will go back into the scholarship to award more of those in need.
