A recent case of mistaken identity has gone viral and for good reason. As a result, a lawsuit has been filed by Shane Lee Brown against the Las Vegas and Henderson Police Depts.
After being jailed for six days, Brown now seeks compensation for negligence, emotional distress, false imprisonment, and violation of civil rights, totaling $500,000 in damages.
The Bag is full of Bad Apples
On the night of Jan. 8, 2020 Mr. Brown, who is Black, was driving home. Shortly thereafter, he was pulled over at a traffic stop. Without his driver’s license on him, the 23-year old Brown provided his name, social security number, and card.
The only problem? It wasn’t him. It wasn’t him by far.

For this to occur it had to pass multiple layers: the arresting officers, the booking processors, and the mugshot photographer, the fingerprint roller, and the corrections officers.
How did they get it this wrong?
Although their names are nearly identical, that is the extent of their similarities. Based on their aesthetics, neither man has a single linking body or facial feature. Obviously one is Black and the other White. One is clean-shaven, the other is fully bearded. One has no criminal history and the other had a warrant for his arrest. And both men are more than twenty-five years apart in age.
According to the lawsuit, a judge only released Shane Lee Brown on Jan. 14 after being informed of his true identity by his public defender Shannon L. Phenix.
KLAS-TV in Las Vegas has since reported that Shane Neal Brown is currently in a San Bernardino County, California jail. Shane Lee Brown was not charged and awaits a court date to clear his actual name.
