After Kendrick Lamar finished a sold-out show at the Barclays Center On Saturday (Aug. 6), he had an impromptu performance at Dumbo House where he said, “Hov, good looking out for clearing that m-thaf-cking line,” Kendrick Lamar said during the performance. “You ain’t never charged me for no m-thaf-cking line, dawg. I really appreciate that sh-t.” HipHop-N-More reports. In attendance were Jay-Z and Beyoncé.
During an episode of Kevin Hart’s Heart to Hart, the comedian asked Jay-Z, “When you make the decision to attach yourself to somebody else’s body of work, or a cameo, or a moment… is that all based on relationships, at this point, or talents that you’re a fan of?”
Jay-Z responded by saying, “It’s mostly — it’s actually always been mostly relationships. Sometimes it’s talent and sometimes someone asks me to be on some. Pretty much every song that I am on I am asked to be. I don’t ask people to be on their songs and I never charge.”
During the performance, Kendrick Lamar highlighted a Jay- Z bar “I do this for my culture,” which samples Jay-Z’s 2001 song “Izzo (H.O.V.A.)”
“Hov did that so hopefully you won’t have to go through that.”
Jay-Z has shown in his years to not only support new talent, but talent that’s going places. Jay-Z hopped on the “B*itch Don’t Kill My Vibe” remix on Lamar’s debut album, Good Kid M.a.a.D. City in 2012.
When Jeezy started gaining buzz in the south, Jay-Z blessed the Snowman on his “Go Crazy Remix” and even further south he collaborated with hip hop newcomer Rick Ross on his mega hit, “Hustlin’ Remix.”
Jay-Z collaborated with Ye West on his best-selling album to date, College Dropout. Their song, “Never Let You Down” was merely a preview to their well-aged album Watch The Throne.
When Nipsey Hussle was selling his “Crenshaw” album for $100, the Brooklyn native purchased 100 copies of Hussle’s music.
Jay-Z, who is notorious for hearing a beat and crafting a verse in his head before delivering it in one take, has offered his genius, flow and perspective all the way from Marcy to Madison Square. As a billionaire voice of the culture, Jay-Z has been able to influence style, language or art. After being inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with the Songwriters Hall of Fame, his impact has been felt since his debut album Reasonable Doubt dropped in 1996 and every Dear Summer since.
