The shocking and disheartening loss of beloved film producer John Singleton reminds us to take care of our health.
The iconically acclaimed director was only 51-years-old when his family decidedly took him off life support on Monday. Doctors say the cause of Singleton’s stroke was high blood pressure.
Singelton, like 40-percent of Black Americans, struggled with high blood pressure.
According to the American Heart Association, Black Americans are disproportionately affected by high blood pressure, making them a primary risk factor for stroke and heart disease.
Singleton’s family issued a statement to raise awareness:
“More than 40% of African-American men and women have high blood pressure, which also develops earlier in life and is usually more severe. His family wants to share the message with all to please recognize the symptoms by going to heart.org.”
Here are several signs that you or a family member may be suffering from high blood pressure:
- severe headache
- fatigue or confusion
- vision problems
- dizziness
- chest pain
- difficulty
- irregular heartbeat
- blood in urine
- pounding in your chest, neck or ears
Singleton produced the iconic American classic: “Boyz in the Hood,” “Poetic Justice,” and films “Higher Learning,” “Baby Boy,” “Rosewood,” “2 Fast 2 Furious” and the list goes on. He leaves behind seven children.
