Play Summary
“The Green Book” by Calvin A. Ramsey is a play about a time when many African-Americans were traveling by car and had the freedom of mobility for the first time, and they were eager to go out on the road. However, segregation brought hidden dangers, and vulnerable Blacks had to maneuver to find safety in accommodations, leisure activities, restaurants, service establishments and anything that they would need during their travels. Hence, the creation of “The Negro Motorist Green Book,” which would prove an invaluable resource to African Americans traveling from 1936 to 1963. The book listed places throughout the country that would welcome African-Americans and would be safe for their patronage. The play reveals how serious a concern safety was for Black travelers during the Jim Crow era. When a Jewish concentration camp survivor enters the play, the complexities of the times play out.
