TULSA, Okla. — Supporters of Families with Sickle Cell Disease, Inc., in collaboration with Langston University-Tulsa, 100 Black Men of Tulsa, Mental Health Association of Tulsa, CGM, Inc, Healthy Start Program, Fatherhood Coalition, Black Wall Street Chamber of Commerce, Census 2020 and Morton Comprehensive Health Services, to host the first “Black Health Counts” Health Disparities and Health Equity Educational Forum in Tulsa, OK on March 7, 2020.
This forum will open the conversation about Health Disparities and how the 2020 Census affects the overall outcome of funds needed in our community.
Health disparities are preventable differences in the burden of disease, injury, violence, or opportunities to achieve optimal health that are experienced by socially disadvantaged populations.
Hear from varies guest panelist and keynote speaker Mrs. Floritta Pope of the Oklahoma State Department of Health Office of Minority Health and Equity.
Race and ethnicity are socially-constructed categories that have tangible effects on the lives of individuals who are defined by how one perceives one’s self and how one is perceived by others. It is important to acknowledge the social construction (i.e., created from prevailing social perceptions, historical policies, and practices) of the concepts of race and ethnicity because it has implications for how measures of race have been used and changed over time.
The event is open to the public and will be held at Langston University-Tulsa on Saturday, March 7, 2020, from 11 AM – 4 pm. Breakout sessions, lunch, door prizes and a question and answer session.
