The Campaign for Southern Equality (CSE) has launched an emergency fund in response to anti-trans restrictions in Texas. The CSE will offer $20,000 in grants to Texans affected by the new anti-trans rules.
The Southern Equality Fund will provide the money to fight anti-trans restrictions in Texas. The Southern Equality Fund was started in 2015 to provide resources for grassroots organizers in the south.
Ultimately, the funds will cover the cost of legal services, emergency planning, mental health support, and more. The funds will go directly to families and individuals affected by Texas’ new anti-trans rules.
Anti-trans Texas AG going after parents
Meanwhile, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is to blame for the most egregious of Texas’ new anti-trans legislation. AG Paxton recently decided to investigate parents who provide gender-affirming care for their children.
Parents of trans children risk a charge of child abuse, according to AG Paxton’s decision. Additionally, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has directed the Department of Family and Protective Services to follow through.
However, according to Allison Scott, director of Impact and Innovation at the CSE, “As a transgender person, I know that affirming and understanding your transgender child is an act of love.”
Meanwhile, the anti-trans restrictions already affect Texas transgender families and youth. Gender-affirming surgeons across the state report they will no longer provide care for people under 18.
Fortunately, the Campaign for Southern Equality has frequently provided financial support for LGBTQIA+ families and young people in Texas, including trans youth. The CSE has released nearly $500,000 in emergency funding for those in need during the pandemic.
Approved applicants can receive up to $250 for this round of emergency funding. According to Scott, “We will disburse this first round and fundraise to support additional rounds of grants.”
